Decorating your reception center or ceremony space can quickly add up to be one of the more expensive things of the day. Most people who will be guests at your wedding are not concerned with how much money you have spent, that doesn’t mean there is no point decorating the room at all, but it does mean that you don’t have to make everything look like it came out of a magazine! (Although with these tips, it could still look that good but no one will believe how little it has cost you!)

Consider not using flowers at your reception.
These are by far one of the biggest expenses, and let’s face it, they die anyway! You can use all sorts of things as center pieces that are cheaper, depending on your theme, things like; 3-4 peacock feathers bought at a craft supply store or website for as little as $1 each, inside a vase bought yourself (not hired) from a cheap home wares store, sand and shells or pebbles, inside a cheap vase, candles inside vases with sand or pebbles. If you really want to have flowers, consider going to your local flower market yourself and buying the flowers and putting them together. You need to get up quite early so go 1 or 2 days before the wedding buy all your materials and set them up inside the reception the day before they should last that long unless its the middle of summer. (you could also ask a friend or aunt who’s style you trust to put them together and set them up for you.

Buy decorations yourself instead of hiring.
Vases, table cloths and decorations are marked up a lot if you buy or hire these through your reception centre. A good idea is to look through cheap home wares or 2 dollar shops or eBay stores etc for vases, pebbles, feathers, and any other craft or wedding decorating ideas you may have. You can also then subtly tell people on the day that they can take them home as a gift, or organize your mother in law to collect them at the end of the night, she will appreciate being given a job. (choose one person from each table to subtly tell, or you can write on their place card, “please take the centre piece home as a gift from us”.)

Don’t get too caught up in what you “should” do.
Things like bonbonnieres or favors are sometimes a bit over the top, save money by using the traditional 5 sugared almonds inside an organza circle tied with ribbon (all can be bought online in eBay stores very cheaply!) People do not usually expect a gift just for coming to your wedding, and sometimes they are a bit useless anyway, i mean do people really want a bottle opener with your name on it? Would you want that? Nothing beats tradition and i think people prefer a thank you card a few weeks later over a little gift on that day. (that half of them forget to take home anyway) Think about it and don’t “should” yourself. If you still want to give your guests something make it serve a dual purpose, such as a small photo frame that doubles as the place card holder.

Remember the saying, KISS. Keep It Simple, Stupid.
Another relevant old saying is “Less is more” You’ll be surprised how far, white or cream linen, a simple candle with a few white or cream roses or other full flower (bought yourself the day before from the local florist) in a low vase will achieve, and nobody needs to know how little you spent!
